I picked up a book called The Knitting Circle for me to read. I was reading to Augusta from the iPod tonight Alice's Adventures in Wonderland from Project Gutenberg through Stanza while snuggled on the couch. I got up from our reading to put the dog out or let the dog in or something otherwise distracting and Augusta had read ahead a couple of chapters on her own, adeptly scrolling the pages of the iPod. When did that little baby learn to READ and operate small electronics?

But... only the first two are translated into Dutch, drives me nuts to have to wait for the third another year! i'm reading the girl who played with fire right now, and i really, really like it. better than the first. i found the girl with the dragon tattoo a little hard to get into, but i also liked that. i'm looking forward to the 3rd.

Not sure if they are translated in English already, they should! I think he even comes close to writers like George Pelecanos and Dennis Lehane, maybe a tad less 'warm".

MrsHobieJoe wrote:I'm a little off trilogies- I've been waiting for "The Captal's Tower" from Melanie Rawn for years! I haven't read much fantasy for a while now but have thoroughly enjoyed it in the past. My own personal rule of thumb concering series: I refuse to pick up a book unless at least the first three books are immediately available. If the library or used bookstore doesn't have the first three then I wait until I find all three together. Three is a rather arbitrary number but I find that three in a row is usually enough to feel like taking a break from a particular world and also, authors often seem to get lazy or lose their focus after or around the third book. Of course, I still make exceptions and then get frustrated and wonder why I haven't learned my lesson yet!

Don't read State of Fear by Michael Crighton. I have loved Crighton for vacation reading! But this book was so full of pontificating and endless "dialog" which was just Crighton RANTING about his distain for Global Warming theories. Awful stuff.

hobiejoe wrote: Brookmyre is brilliant! First read his stuff about ten years ago and clicked immediately. Politics, cultural references &tc. Checked his bio and found that he is almost exactly the same age as me. Successful bastid. Very dark humour, even if some of the plots get a little far-fetched sometimes. Likes his music as well, got me into Teenage Fanclub. "....Rubber Ducks" and "Boiling A Frog" are personal favourites. Reminds me a bit of that Floridian author (Hiaasen?) when he was good. I first came across Brookmyre when I was traveling through Scotland a few years ago. I was in the reading room of our hotel in Portree and saw the title of a book: The Sacred Art of Stealing. That was enough to catch my attention. I opened the book and before the end of the first page I was hooked! I have sought out eveyr book of his I can lay my hands on. I was fortunate to pick up a couple more when I last was in Scotland, two years ago. Then I found, recently, these two, aforementioned, on Amazon. I am waiting with baited breath for Pandaemonium, to be released August 13th, to find its way to my bookshelf. *edit* Yes, I practiced the title. Well, kind of. I left another book of note in its place.
