There's sadly so much vile hate here for U2 but in any case I think Zooropa was very underrated.

If I recall, this record was made on the road, while they were touring in support of Achtung Baby. The band was in the clubs, ingesting a lot of dance music ( you can hear it in "Lemon") in Europe and recorded this quickly compared to earlier efforts.
This was an interesting period for U2, for me, the world... Fairly newly wed, I had just moved to take charge of a private English school in remote Noto Hanto, and was still adjusting to their new directions in the mind-blowing Achtung, Baby! when this came along... It was -- different, as are each of their efforts, and I was able to appreciate and admire much of it, though not immediately. It did indeed result in a resurgence in appreciation of Johnny Cash, which I thought was deserved. I liked Lemon, but this was also unique, relevant, and cool...

Agreed. Synth sounds like farts. Never heard it before (despite having attended to the Zoo TV Tour). Poor Johnny... this gets a 3.
